Overview

The University of the Philippines Diliman Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (UPD IACUC)is a University Standing Committee under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD) tasked with overseeing the use of laboratory animals for research in the University.

UPD IACUC started out as the College of Science Animal Care and Use Committee (CSACUC) in 2008, when the then Dean of the College of Science Dr. Caesar Saloma tasked Dr. Annabelle Herrera of the Institute of Biology, Dr. Maria Josefa Panta of the Marine Science Institute, Dr. Evangeline Amor of the Institute of Chemistry, Dr. Cynthia Saloma of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and Raquel Rubio of the Natural Sciences Research Institute with creating a committee that will advise the Dean on the proper and appropriate handling of laboratory animals that are used for experiments in the College of Science. Dr. Herrera served as the Chairperson of CSACUC until 2011. She was succeeded by the current Chairperson, Dr. Cynthia Saloma.

In 2011, the OVCRD was developing a University-wide animal care and use committee, intending to centralize all animal care and use matters of the University. Thus, CSACUC was dissolved and its members form the UPD-IACUC.

The Committee is tasked with the following:

  • evaluate and approve the Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) and the protocols for scientific procedures involving laboratory animals in UP Diliman.
  • monitor and review the implementation of the ACUP and the protocols
  • submit an annual report on the status and implementation of the ACUP
  • provide necessary technical recommendations, guidelines, and references for scientific procedures involving laboratory animals
